Richard Bryant-Jefferies

Price: £5-99       81 pages        ISBN 1 905 203 91 8       Pen Press Publishers Ltd.     June 2006

Do you ever feel trapped? Has your life ‘lost its zest’? How can you handle negative feelings and feel more self-confident? What can you do to bring some sparkle back into your life? When there seems no-one to talk to, a little self-encouragement may bring a fresh outlook on life. Everyone will find something useful to reflect on in this little book … inspiring.

Text Box: That's it, isn't it?
I keep doing it.
It's like choosing to walk down the same path,
 day after day,
and go through the same experiences,
and the same old feelings...

... Time for a new path.

Formed of a series of statements that reflect feelings and perception during times of stress and uncertainty, with re-framing statements encouraging greater self-belief and positive responses, 'this book was conceived and written during those times when clients do not attend. I felt that by writing this I would perhaps offer something to the many people who go through tough times, and who choose not to turn to some form of person-to-person Text Box: ‘It feels really good
Trusting my own opinions
And not always relying on other people.
It was a little scary at first,
But now I feel much more self-confident’
therapy.

'A Little Book of Therapy' is not written to be read from cover to cover, but rather to be dipped in and out of. My hope and my belief is that the page that is chosen will convey meaning to you, and will encourage you to seek a fresh perspective on your situation.

For a long while I have been of the opinion that therapy does not create solutions, but rather creates "the possibility that solutions might happen". I hope that 'A Little Book of Therapy' will serve to help create for you the possibility of finding solutions to problems and difficulties that you are feeling, and that otherwise threaten to overwhelm you. It will certainly offer fresh perspectives and, as in all of life, leave you with the choice as to whether or how you will act in response to what is offered.

"Counsellors and psychotherapists rejoice when at the end of a therapeutic process their clients have become their own best counsellors. This little book gives a glimpse of what it can be like to have the ability to create the kind of internal dialogue which makes it possible to change direction and to find new hope. For those who feel that life has lost its zest or who are trapped by situations or by their own destructive habits, these pages may provide the clue to a solution which is waiting to be discovered. Some may find again the inner resources which they thought they had lost while others may be encouraged to pick up the phone and book an appointment with a therapist or simply speak honestly to a friend.
I commend what is, in effect the outcome of many years experience of a therapist who has accompanied those in varied predicaments and who has not lost his faith in the ability of human beings to discover their own wisdom. It constitutes a vote of confidence in the human spirit".

Brian Thorne, Emeritus Professor of Counselling, University of East Anglia and Co-founder of The Norwich Centre, from his Foreword.
